Darood Shareef is a way of showing respect to the Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him), through him Allah guided us, he has done so much, and he was a great blessing from Allah. So Darood Shareef is a way of showing respect to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him), and also in the Holy Qur'an we have been commanded to send Darood Shareef on the Holy Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him).
[33:57] Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet. O ye who believe! you also should invoke blessings on him and salute him with the salutation of peace.
The Holy Quran : Chapter 33: Al-Ahzab الاٴحزَاب
In this verse of the Holy Qu'ran, Almighty Allah, His Malaa'ikah (angels) and the Muslims have been mentioned as sending Darood upon the Holy Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him). So, Darood Shareef is actually "a Du'a (prayer) in praise of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him)."
Hadhrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) said:
"He who reads a single Darood upon me, Almighty Allah blesses him ten times, ten of his sins are forgiven, and he is increased ten times in rank. (Mishkaat-its a book of Hadeeth).
Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Ma'sud (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
"On the Day of Qiyamah, the closest to me from among the people will be those who have read the most amount of Darood Shareef". (Tirmidhi)
It is now clear that the recitation of Darood Shareef (Salawat) is in perfect obedience to the Command of Allah and to the teachings of Holy Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him). There is no reason to choose anything else when we have with us the words of Allah and His Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him).
Hadhrat Muhammad (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) has clearly proclaimed that Darood Shareef is the panacea of all ills and that if any one comes across a calamity he should recite the maximum number of Darood Shareef and God has promised that:
"He who reads a single Durood upon me, Almighty Allah blesses him ten times, ten of his sins are forgiven, and he is increased ten times in stages (internally)." Hadhrat Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) Mishkat al-Masabih
